Does Microsoft Teams work without WIFI?
Teams requires network connection or internet for you to be able to use it for communication. It will not work without network connection. You can use wifi or mobile data.
To enable the feature, Teams mobile clients for iOS and Android have a new setting to Reduce data usage. The default is Never (as shown in Figure 1) but can be set to Always or Cellular.
Teams is always conservative on bandwidth utilization and can deliver HD video quality in under 1.5Mbps.
App | Estimated data per hour |
---|---|
Microsoft Teams (Video calls and meetings) | Standard quality (total includes downloads and uploads) 2.7 GB Using Video & Audio 90 MB for audio only |
Spotify (Streaming music) | Normal setting: 40 MB High setting: 70 MB Extreme setting (Premium subscribers): 150 MB |
It sounds like the problem may be with the data permissions setting on your phone. Android lets users determine which apps can use cellular data and which can only use WiFi so as to keep their data usage down. You may want to check out the Mobile Data Usage settings on your phone to see if Teams is set to Wi-Fi only.
- Sign in to the computer and the Teams phone as the same user.
- On the Teams phone, select your picture and then select Connect a device.
- Select Find a device.
- When the Teams phone locates the computer, select Connect.
- On the computer, select Connect.
Because this data is required to provide the service, this typically means that we retain personal data until the user stops using Microsoft Teams, or until the user deletes personal data.
It roughly uses about 225MB of data per hour for group video calling. In the case of HD group video calling with 540p videos on a 1080p screen, Teams will consume about 450MB of data per hour. How much data does one minute of video calling on Skype use?

The minimum bandwidth Microsoft recommends is an upload and download speed of 0.1 Mb. Ideally, your organization should allocate 8 Mb upload and download for Microsoft Teams. An 8 Mb dedicated speed will ensure you can have 5 participants or more in a single meeting.
Do you get Teams messages when offline?
"Appear offline is when you want to indicate that you're not signed in to Teams, so will not be responding until you're back online. You'll still receive notifications if anyone messages you."
Extended offline access enables devices running Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise to stay activated for up to six months without the need to connect to the internet to validate the license and install updates. To use extended offline access, you must have Version 2002 or later of Microsoft 365 Apps.

When offline, you cannot make or receive calls. Instant messages sent to you will be available when you sign on, independent of the sender's online status.
Yesterday MS Teams used 9 Gb of data over a 50 minute video call on 4G. Completely maxed out my monthly bundle. This is extremely high and very far from the official 270 Mb per hour that I see published online.
Internet connectivity is a common cause of Microsoft Teams issues. If you're getting an error message saying, “Microsoft Teams ran into a problem reconnecting”, open Microsoft Teams Settings on the Windows control panel and navigate to the Network & Internet menu.
